NEW - Real time PCR assays from Merck Millipore for Detection of food-borne pathogens, beer-spoilage and genetically modified organisms
Merck Millipore distributes foodproof® real-time PCR products from Biotecon GmbH Since January 1, 2008, the Merck Millipore took over sales of PCR products from the international biotechnology company Biotecon Diagnostics GmbH, Potsdam, Germany which had been formerly distributed by Roche Diagnostics. The contract allows Merck to market the licensed PCR products, that are carried under the umbrella name foodproof®, in almost all countries of the world, except Germany and the USA. They will - as they have been up to now - be supplied by Roche Diagnostics. PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction and is a method which amplifies DNA genes or fragments in vitro. The foodproof® product range contains so-called 'real-time' PCR (RT-PCR) kits which is a modern variation of the 'PCR kits' suitable for the detection of bacteria, viruses and other organisms, and allows the 'online' monitoring of the reaction progress during the amplification process. This is a major advantage over 'standard' PCR kits which require laborious and time-consuming post-PCR steps such as gel electrophoresis to analyse the reactions. Merck is now offering very innovative RT-PCR products based on the Light Cycler instrument from Roche Diagnostics which provides highest precise results. The kits are developed for the molecular detection of pathogenic bacteria in foods and environmental samples, such as Salmonella, Listeria, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli O157, Campylobacter, and Enterobacter sakazakii. A unique feature of the latter kit is the opportunity to simultaneously detect E. sakazakii and all bacteria of the genus Enterobacteriaceae (incl. Salmonella) separately with only one reaction. This property can especially save significant analysis time and costs, as there is only one reaction necessary to analyse the absence of Enterobacteriaceae, Salmonella, and E. sakazakii which is for example very important for baby food manufacturers. The foodproof® Beer Screening kit detects more than 25 spoilage organisms known to contaminate beer and thus covers significantly more species than any other commercially available RT-PCR test. Moreover, this kit, developed and validated in cooperation with large German breweries, also enables to the identification of the most important beer spoilage species or groups of species. Included in the RT-PCR product portfolio are also kits for screening of a broad range of different genetically modified organisms and the quantification of particular GMOs' such as soy or corn. Essential for valid results of PCR reactions is the right and efficient sample processing that needs to eliminate substances inhibitory for the Taq Polymerase enzyme. For all foodproof® RT-PCR kits, quick and easy-to use foodproof® sample preparation kits are available These kits reduce the sample processing time to only 30 min to 1 h with less handling steps so that the overall testing time takes only about 1,5 -2 h. For detection of bacteria only an enrichment time of 18 - 24 h is needed, thus the time to result is shortened by several days compared to standard methods. All foodproof® kits are extensively validated, e.g. foodproof® Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and E. coli O157 kits are approved by AOAC-RI and NordVal. The foodproof product line extends Merck's unique and innovative program for the rapid and convenient automated or manual detection and confirmation food pathogens of Salmonella, Listeria spp., Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli O157, pathogenic Campylobacter, and for other pathogens. All these rapid tests fit perfectly to Merck's comprehensive range of high-quality granulated dehydrated culture media.
