QC Standards, Controls, CRM and Proficiency Testing Schemes a rapidmicrobiology Special Focus
Quality control (QC) in a microbiology laboratory is essential to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. QC systems are designed to highlight any errors in materials, equipment, or staff training at any stage of the analytical process from sample/specimen collection through to result reporting.
- Positive and Negative Controls - equipment manufacturers often supply QC controls or have them built into the assay kit to check the protocol has been run correctly. In addition, independent third-party controls are important to use to check the assay results for samples outside of the manufacturer's control. 'The use of third-party control materials should be considered, either instead of, or in addition to, any control materials supplied by the reagent or instrument manufacturer – ISO 15189'
- Calibration of Instruments - using known certified reference materials
- Growth Promotion Testing (GPT) - microbiological media are inoculated with a low prenumerated number of reference strains of organisms.
- Proficiency Testing Schemes (PTS) - participation in External Quality Assessment (EQA) helps labs compare their performance against that of other labs using third-party samples that have values unknown to the lab.
In this rapidmicrobiology special focus on quality controls, discover solutions to help your laboratory meet required standards and deliver the best, most reliable results.
We learn from Andrew Zenger, the Global Product Manager at ZeptoMetrix, how their NATtrol molecular controls range, which is available in both liquid and swab-based format is essential for clinical laboratory good practice. Microbiologics also offer a range of molecular third-party controls including some for Point of Care (POC) testing.
Find out in Liofilchem's instructional video how to use their ATCC® and NCTC® CultiControl range of lyophilized, quantitative microorganisms for Growth Promotion Testing.
Proficiency testing schemes, a requirement of ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 15189 are available from BIPEA whose range includes PTS for total counts in pharmaceutical waters. LGC AXIO is also hosting a webinar, explaining how to get the best value from being part of a PTS, how to improve the accuracy of your tests and the efficiency of your laboratory. This will be illustrated in the webinar by using data from the LGC AXIO best-in-class PORTAL system.
Biosisto BV has prepared a whitepaper on the use of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) for food and water laboratories, this is available to download and includes a step-by-step plan on how to implement CRMs.
