30th November 2021 Product update: rapidmicrobiology.com
Special Focus on Molecular Testing for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Variants Including Omicron
The latest SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern, named Omicron, has approximately 30 spike protein mutations, almost double its predecessor Delta. It also has a mutation that the alpha variant possesses, which is picked up as S-gene failure on RT-PCR tests. That gives it the ability to evade our antibody responses, which is one of the reasons it has been classified as a VOC. The variant has spread rapidly in South Africa, from being first detected in early November to now being detected in 90% of positive SARS-CoV-2 samples.
Vaccine manufacturers are now assessing if current shots effectively prevent the severe disease from the variant, and Moderna has released a statement to say they will have tweaked their vaccine in early 2022 to protect against Omicron.
The emergency brake hasn't been pulled yet, allowing the variant to spread to all communities, and with flu season still down the line, PCR testing labs and suppliers will be put under serious pressure in the coming weeks. Read this updated version of our variant special and contact a test kit provider today.
