New EN ISO 7218 General Requirements and Guidance for Microbiological Examinations in the Food Chain

Join our upcoming webinar on the revised standard EN ISO 7218:2024 on general requirements and guidance for microbiological examinations in the food chain. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition, EN ISO 7218:2007, and its 2013 amendment.

The revised EN ISO 7218 is a framework for laboratories that conduct microbiological tests on food and feeding stuffs, with a scope that ranges from the preparation and handling of samples to specific microbiological methods, including staff and personal hygiene as well as requirements for equipment, consumables and quality control in the lab.

By standardizing microbiological testing procedures, EN ISO 7218 helps labs to detect pathogens and spoilage organisms accurately, consistently and efficiently. It is essential for labs performing microbiological examinations, for food and feed producers, QA and QC personnel, and regulatory bodies involved in food safety and public health. EN ISO 7218:2024 also provides guidance for food microbiology labs on the technical requirements for accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 ‘General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories’.

Barbara has over 30 years of industrial microbiology experience and is currently working in Regulatory Marketing at Merck Life Science KGaA. She is an active member in several national and international bodies addressing microbiological topics in ISO, CEN, IDF and IFU, including the ISO Working Groups ‘General requirements and guidance for microbiological examinations’, ‘Method validation’ and ‘Culture media’.

Dr. Andreas Bubert
Senior Global Product Manager, Culture Media, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany

Andreas received a PhD in molecular microbiology for his research and diagnostics work on Listeria. He has over 25 years’ experience at Merck Life Science KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, focusing on microbiological solutions for the food and beverage industries. He is a member of AOAC RI Advisory Council and has authored over 50 publications.
