More Sustainable Microbiology - Making Labs Greener a rapidmicrobiology Special Focus
How can laboratories make microbiology testing more sustainable? In this rapidmicrobiology special focus on making microbiology green, we highlight some easy-to-implement practical steps that any lab can take to minimize their environmental impact.
Plastic Waste and Packaging: It's not easy to move away from single-use plastic disposables, so if washing and re-using is not a viable option, consider:
- Supplier Commitment: Choose a supplier that is actively moving to reduce their CO2 emissions. INTEGRA Biosciences has made significant progress with this over the past 5 years. In a special interview with their sustainability co-ordinator, we discover how this success has been achieved. Medical Wire also has net zero goals and implements sustainable practices in the manufacturing of specimen collection swabs and packaging. Sartolab® RF|BT vacuum filtration units use a life cycle approach, evaluating environmental impact from inception to disposal. Micronic's Eco-Friendly Rack Range is made of 99% in-house renewed material, setting a new sustainability standard for sample storage racks. Demand clear, third-party verified information about the environmental impact of laboratory products. My Green Lab's ACT (Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency) Environmental Impact Factor Label certification involves considering manufacturing, energy and water use, packaging, and end-of-life; ACT makes it easy to choose more sustainable products. Alpha Labs' Fastrak and FastZAP pipette tip refills have received very low environmental impact scores (1.0) for manufacturing.
- Rethink Test Protocols: Diamidex's protocol for Legionella pneumophila cuts petri dish use by 75%. Discover the estimated cost savings resulting from using the new ALOA® ONE DAY Listeria short protocol for 50,000 tests/year. A 2015 study showed that Petrifilm™ plates used 76% less energy, 79% less water, emitted 75% less greenhouse gas, and produced 66% less waste than traditional culture media methods.
Energy Efficiency: Choose lab appliances and equipment that use less energy. When not in use, turn off lights and equipment. The energy used to transport plastic containers can be much less than equivalent glass containers. The new terminally sterilised plastic bottled media products developed by Cherwell offer a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to glass bottled media for use in sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing. For the future of water purification Sartorius' iJust software, optimizes Reverse Osmosis (RO) performance, leading to tangible savings and environmental benefits.
Biodegradable, recycled or compostable consumables:
Green Elephant has produced a plant-based 96-well plate from polylactic acid (PLA). PLA microplates have a 50% lower carbon footprint than their fossil-based counterparts. Eppendorf uses Post-Consumer Recyclate (PCR) for disposable racks for pipette tips, which is obtained from leftover materials from the contact lens manufacturing process.
Greener Reagents: discover more environmentally acceptable substitutes. Charles River offers the Endosafe® Alternative Bacterial Endotoxin Testing Method Validation and Implementation Service to help adopt alternative testing methods that meet the highest standards, reduce environmental impact, and drive your business forward. HiMedia manufactures a range of HiVeg™ culture media for media fill testing, formulated using plant-based peptones and entirely free from animal-derived nutrients. Fujifilm Wako's Neo+ facilitates the same sensitivity of endotoxin detection as LAL reagent through a more sustainable and environmentally friendly method.
Use Digital Platforms: nomad Smart Microbial Solutions does paperless onsite monitoring for HARPC microbial contamination risks. SherpaPharma’s Cloud-based EM Solution is an affordable and easy way to intuitively follow the whole QC/EM Microbiology process.
