Thermo Scientific Brilliance e. coli/coliform Selective Agar Allows E.coli Confirmation Directly on Plate

Thermo Scientific has optimized their Thermo Scientific Brilliance™ e. coli/coliform Selective Agar to allow the indole reaction to be performed directly on the culture plate, ensuring rapid and convenient confirmation of presumptive-positive Escherichia coli colonies.

Thermo Scientific Brilliance e. coli/coliform Selective Agar is a chromogenic medium for the detection and enumeration of E. coli and other coliforms (important hygiene indicators) from food and water samples.

Chromogenic agents within the medium are used to detect the ß-glucuronidase activity of E. coli and the ß-galactosidase activity of coliforms (including E. coli), allowing them to be clearly differentiated on the culture plate (coliforms - pink, E. coli - purple).

Now, optimization of Thermo Scientific Brilliance e. coli/coliform Selective Agar allows purple, presumptive-positive E. coli colonies to be confirmed directly on the plate by performing the indole reaction. When the plate is flooded with Kovacs solution (Thermo Scientific product code R21522, BactiDropTM Indole Kovacs), E. coli colonies turn a distinctive cherry red colour, allowing rapid and easy enumeration of confirmed E. coli colonies.
